Instructions for Your Autobiography
An autobiography is a narrative of your life. YOU MAY BE REQUIRED TO WRITE AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY FOR STUDENT TEACHING! Many student teachers include an autobiography in their job portfolios. Although the autobiography reveals some of the information found in your résumé, the main difference between the two is that the autobiography usually reveals the "human aspect" of your life and answers the question "What makes you different from other people?" Past student teachers have included the following information in their autobiographies:
Where you were born and raised
Your family life
Your educational experiences
Your accomplishments, activities, hobbies
Unique experiences or extenuating circumstance that may have affected your life
Your philosophies, values, and ethics
How your perceive your own character
Your career goals
What you believe about education and teaching
The choice obviously is yours. My advice to you in writing an autobiography is as follows:
Give information that is not found in the résumé.
Show your humanistic side but don't give information that is too personal.
Give information that will help future employers understand you better.
Give information that will strengthen the employer's perception of you as a future teacher.
Grammar, spelling, and writing style are VERY IMPORTANT! Have someone proofread your autobiography who knows how to write!
In summary, the autobiography requirement is as follows:
Your autobiography must be word processed
Your autobiography must be at least one side of one page double spaced.
